'DREAMING THE ORIENT'

The attraction of the Western world for the East is not a new occurrence: as early as the IVth c. A.D. first the Greeks and then the Romans used the name Serica, the Land of Silk, to refer to China.

Historians trace back the origins of the Silk Road to some 2,000 years B.C. Rare goods and products unknown in Europe were conveyed for centuries via this legendary route.

With the XVth c. the European merchants set out on a search for a sea route around Africa to the Indies, as their former itinerary was being destabilized by the Turco-Byzantine wars, the fall of Constantinople and the decline of Venice after the Battle of Lepante: that was the age of the great geographic discoveries.

Evoking the arts of the Orient is conjuring a fairyland of genies and dragons, and fabulous palaces where wise caliphs and wicked viziers listen to captivating storytellers. But aside from the delights of strangeness and exoticism, these lands offered new creeds and spiritual beliefs that the West came to be familiar with and admire, such as Sufism, Taoism, Hinduism and Buddhism.

Pilgrimage to the East? Inner journey? Homecoming? such is the Oriental Dream ...
